Welcome to our farm web site. Wentworth Family Farms has a long history of farming in Central Illinois. Our ancestors moved here during the 1860's, and family members have been farming here ever since. We have designed this site primarily for our current landowners to view updates on their farms in Central Illinois. Our operation provides the latest in equipment technologies, crop management, FSA programs, and market advice to our landowners. We invite prospective landowners to view our operation and contact us with questions or inquiries.
FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 29.2010
This week will see the beginning of corn harvest. Another week of hot dry weather has dropped corn moisture to the low 20s and high teens. Our biggest concern will be shelling corn off the ear butts. What a change from last year when we were just trying to get through the wet fields. This past week yield checks were completed on the corn fields; the resulting predictive yields varied drastically. The ear counts are high, but we have lost 20 to 30 bushels per acre due to aborted kernels and small ear size. Silage harvest is complete (check video). Tiling and deep tillage has begun on those acres. The tonnage on the best ground was less than last year, and the other ground was down some also due to the lack of rain in July and August. At this time, it looks like we are three weeks to a month ahead of last year. The warm, dry weather is predicted to continue for another week. We have taken delivery on a CNH 8120 combine with twelve row corn head and 35 foot Draper platform. This will definitely speed up our harvest this year. Soybeans have begun to turn colors so I would estimate that the beginning of that harvest would be two weeks away. Let's all be safe and considerate this fall.
